Sincere and Meaningful Dialogue is The  Only Solution For Problem of J&K: JRL

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik met at the residence of senior resistance leader Syed Ali Geelani at Hyderpora. The leadership in a joint statement said that While in principle Pro-Freedom leadership has always advocated and supported sincere and productive dialogue as a  means of conflict resolution over Jammu and  Kashmir,  what it inherently entails from all participants to dialogue is the basic acknowledgment that there is a dispute that has to be resolved. But Govt of India continuously refuses to accept this basic premise and the reality on the ground.

Referring to Indian PM Mr. Modis outright dismissal of former

Home minister Mr. Chidambaram,s suggestion of restoration of autonomy for J&K , JRL said that if Govt of India even rejects the demand of its co political party for restoration of autonomy guaranteed by its own constitution, calling it a betrayal with soldiers and hence unacceptable, how will such a dispensation in New Delhi  address or engage with the Kashmiri people’s political will and aspiration of self-determination for which people have been relentlessly struggling and sacrificing for the past 70 years.

JRL said that this clearly indicates that the hyped upon appointment of Mr. Dineshwar Sharma by Govt of India as its interlocutor for J&K is nothing more than a tactic to buy time adopted under international pressures and regional compulsions and due to the abysmal failure of the state policy of military repression upon the people of Kashmir.

JRL said Mr. Sharma’s recent comment that he will come to Kashmir to dissuade the youth from Islam and pursuing their legitimate political aspirations so that Kashmir does not become Syria is misleading. To compare the internationally recognized 70-year-old political and humanitarian issue of Kashmir to that of the sectarian war and power struggle in Syria is deception and propaganda as there is no correlation between the two situations.

JRL further said that Mr Sharmas assertion that he is coming to the valley with the directive from Government of India to “restore peace” rather than addressing the dispute or its resolution in keeping with the overwhelming majority sentiment of people of J&K limits the scope of any engagement with him and makes it an exercise in futility.

JRL said that unless the Kashmir dispute is understood and addressed in its historical context and in the background of international commitments made over it, lasting peace can neither be achieved in J&K nor in the subcontinent. While the repressive state militaristic approach continues in dealing with Kashmir, to talk of peace and dialogue is also a ploy by the GOI to strike a hard bargain which people of Kashmir and leadership will never succumb to.

JRL observed that for any Kashmiri to be part of this futile exercise will only undermine our internationally acknowledged legitimate and just struggle ,nourished by the blood of our martyrs and great sacrifices and hardships rendered daily by the Masses.JRL reiterated that use of unlimited force on common people killings torture of youth  imprisonment intimidation propaganda media trials harassment of women and all such inhuman measures will not deter people or leadership to give up pursuing their legitimate demand for resolution of Kashmir issue as per our will and aspirations.

Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy stokes fresh controversy by saying that if Sardar Patel was made the country’s first prime minister there would not have been a Kashmir problem.’

On Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy said had Patel been made the Prime Minister of India, there would have been no Kashmir problem.

“How one wishes Gandhiji anointed Sardar Vallabhbhai as the first Prime Minister of India! There would have been no Kashmir problem,” the Tripura governor tweeted.

In a series of tweets on Sardar Patel’s birth 142nd birth anniversary, Tathagata Roy said it is a day to take a pledge in the name of the “Mahapurush who welded India into a single country”, and not for “stupid petulance over petty issues”. The Tripura governor said he administered the oath of unity and flagged off the ‘Run for Unity’ at Vivekananda Maidan in Agartala.

A day for taking a pledge in the name of the Mahapurush who welded India into a single country. Not for stupid petulance over petty issues

In Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Run for Unity marathon to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, often called as the Iron Man of India. The Prime Minister, accusing the previous governments of ignoring Patel’s legacy, said that “people earlier tried their best to ensure that the contribution of Sardar Patel was forgotten and diminished”.

The Tripura governor, however, is no stranger to making controversial statements. Following the Supreme Court’s temporary ban on sale of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during Diwali, Tathagata Roy said that soon the award wapsi brigade can get Hindu cremation banned.

कभी दही हांडी,आज पटाखा ,कल को हो सकता है प्रदूषण का हवाला देकर मोमबत्ती और अवार्ड वापसी गैंग हिंदुओ की चिता जलाने पर भी याचिका डाल दे !

“First Dahi Handi, today firecrackers, tomorrow the award wapsi brigade and those holding candlelight vigils may file a litigation against cremation rites of Hindus on the grounds of causing air pollution,” the Tripura governor tweeted.

The Tripura governor was caught in the storm’s eye when he called Rohingya refugees “garbage”. “No Islamic country nor Bangladesh accepts Rohingias. But India, great Dharamshala, must. And if u say no, you’re inhuman!” Roy had tweeted, adding that he was being trolled by “Islamists and stooges” for having said that India shouldn’t accept “Rohingiya garbage”.

Anantnag Bypoll: High Court Gives 3 Weeks To Election Commission of India (ECI) For Reply

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has granted three weeks time to Election Commission of India for filling reply to a petition, seeking conducting of elections to fill up the Anantnag Parliamentary seat.

The petition has been filed by one of the candidates, GM Wani (Independent) and he has sought the high court’s directions to the ECI to conduct the elections as soon as possible.

A single bench of the court comprising Justice M K Hanjura granted the ECI three weeks time after its counsel advocate S A Makroo sought the same. “(Union Home Ministry) is at liberty file the reply within (same time),” the court according to Kashmir Glory said.

The Election Commission of India in May this year rescinded  the by-election for Anantnag parliamentary seat scheduled on May 25, reasoning that “free and fair poll is not possible due to prevailing ground situation and non-availability of sufficient security forces.”

In its order, the three-member Commission headed by then Chief Election Commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi rescinded the notification for the election after reports from the J&K administration and State’s Chief Electoral Officer that “there has been no noticeable improvement in the law and order situation in Anantnag parliamentary constituency.”

The ECI, according to the order, cited the apprehensions expressed by the State’s Chief Electoral Officer that there may be reluctance on the part of the polling personnel to go to the polling locations “in view of fear in their minds with regard to their safety and security (which) is also a matter of serious concern.”

The bypoll, earlier slated to be held on April 12, was postponed for May 25 following unprecedented protests and clashes and low voter turnout in Srinagar Lok Sabha segment on April 9. At least eight civilians were killed by security forces on the day of polling for the Srinagar-Budgam segment.

The Commission had said the by-poll will be held for Anantnag “when the situation becomes conducive for the same.”

Kashmir Photojournalist’s Family Waiting For Answers After Two Months of His Arrest By NIA

In a store-room made of tin sheets, located on the terrace of her two-room house in Tahab village, Rubeena Akhtar takes out old newspapers she keeps in a gunny sack. “Kashmir Times, Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Uzma,” she murmurs as she takes the newspapers out one by one, and shows the photographs in them. “Look. In all of them, you will find pictures he has taken.”

The credit line reads ‘Kamran Yousuf/Pulwama’. Akhtar’s son, the 20-year-old photojournalist was arrested by the NIA on September 4, for allegedly colluding with stone-throwing protesters. Nearly two months later, his family asks for evidence that they have found against him.

“They have alleged he was taking money,” says Akhtar, 42, when The Indian Express meets them earlier this month. “Kamran had three bank accounts — two of them were closed long back because of no transactions. The only operational bank account has Rs 1,900 in it.”

Pulwama Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammad Aslam admits there is no FIR against him. “But there are certain FIRs registered against others where we are trying to establish if he had any role. That is being verified.” Pressed about a specific case against Kamran, Aslam said they were investigating a video uploaded by him of a Tricolour being burnt by protesters in Karimabad village.

NIA PRO Alok Mittal, however, says Kamran was arrested as “his name surfaced in the investigation of a terror-funding case”. “We came to know later that he is also working as a photojournalist.”

With his mother a single parent, Kamran started working early. At the time of his arrest, he was working as a freelance photojournalist for several local dailies and as a reporter and stringer for two Urdu television channels, Gulistan News and Musnif TV. “You can check it yourself,” says Kamran’s maternal grandfather Mohammad Yousuf Ganai as he spreads out several documents and identity cards on the floor.

The documents include an identity card from the Election Commission of India authorising him to cover the parliamentary bypolls for Srinagar and Anantnag constituencies, a card from Gulistan News showing him as its reporter, and an identity card from Munsif TV identifying him as its stringer.

An authorisation letter from Gulistan News to the Pulwama Deputy Commissioner, dated March 13, says, “…appointed and authorized Mr Kamran Yousuf Bhat R/O Pulwama as a reporter of Gulistan News for Pulwama. Please allow him to participate in all the events and VVIP functions… This authorization is valid till 31st March 2018.”

Ishfaq Gowhar, a senior official at Gulistan News, confirms Kamran worked for them and that they had issued him the authorisation letter. “He would send us footage of different events. But he was not on our rolls.”

His colleagues say Kamran was dedicated towards his work, and the first to reach any news site, including during encounters and protests — which has now been cited as evidence against him. “Kamran told me that NIA (officials) were asking him how he was present at every encounter site or protest. He said they asked him why ‘stone-pelters’ would call him and ask him to cover the protests. They asked why he would put in so much effort to cover the protests,” says Kamran’s uncle Irshad Ahmad Ganai, who has travelled to New Delhi to meet him in NIA custody.

The NIA hasn’t tortured him, Ahmad Ganai adds, but claims pressure is being put on him to turn “approver”.

Kamran’s grandfather intervenes. “Sometimes Armymen too called him to cover their functions. The (National Conference) NC, PDP and even BJP officials called him at times for coverage of their events,” he says. “I told him many times to stay away from such functions, but he said it was his work,” says Yousuf Ganai.

Kamran was just two years old when his parents separated, and his mother shifted into her father’s house. Kamran’s parents got divorced a couple of years later. “When we urged Rubeena to remarry, she refused,” says Yousuf Ganai, a retired political science lecturer. “She said she didn’t want to ruin her son’s life.”

Akhtar took up work as a teacher-cum-clerk at a local private school to support her son and herself. It was only recently that Yousuf Ganai helped her construct her own house; the two-room, single-storey structure lies adjacent to his. After Kamran was arrested, a devastated Akhtar couldn’t stay there alone, and moved back into her parents’ home.

Akhtar says what keeps her going is the two-minute weekly telephone call Kamran is allowed. “He talks for a couple of minutes before the line gets cut.” She hasn’t been to Delhi though to meet him. “We had no idea where the NIA office was and where Kamran was lodged,” says Ahmad Ganai. “That’s why I went.”

As Akhtar talks, her eyes keep drifting to the last photos Kamran took, published in Kashmir Uzma, a leading Urdu daily, on August 27. One shows J&K Police chief S P Vaid at a wreath-laying ceremony for policemen killed in an attacked on District Police Lines in Pulwama. Another shows a building stormed by militants

Naeem Akhtar Participates in BJP’s National Executive Meet, NC Expresses Shock, Says BJP & PDP Have Same Agenda

National Conference on Monday expressed shock over the participation of PDP Spokesperson and Minister Nayeem Akhtar’s participation in the BJP’s National Executive meet at SKICC Srinagar and demanded that the party come out with an explanation.

Reacting over the presence of senior Cabinet Minister and PDP senior member Nayeem Akhtar, in the executive meeting of BJP held at Srinagar on Sunday, Party Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani said that the inclusion of PDP in a high level BJP meet was a clear sign that PDP and BJP had the same agenda in Jammu and Kashmir. “Executive body meetings are not part of governance decision making. These are policy making occasions for the party,” Nasir said. He added that the news of Akhtar being part of this meeting was “not just shocking, but questionable too”.

He alleged that PDP had “merged” with BJP. “Looking at the way two parties are now having a joint executive body meeting in Kashmir, the north pole and south pole have not just met, but undoubtedly merged,” Nasir said.

He said that people of Kashmir deserve an explanation about what the senior PDP leader was doing at the BJP policy meeting. “Are they (PDP) taking dictations from BJP? Or are they helping the saffron brigade to spread its tentacles better over J&K?” the Provincial President said.

Terming the alliance of PDP-BJP a result “well devised strategy” to change the political discourse and expression of the state, Nasir said that in the past three years, state has seen how the ruling alliance had made dilution of state’s special status its one point agenda. “Article 35A, Article 370, Beef Ban, GST… the list goes on. The ruling alliance was forged to make us surrender to the vehemently aggressive saffronisation of India,”

He said that the fact that Akhtar not only showed his presence at the meeting, but also addressed the party workers of BJP needed no explanation vis-à-vis the significance of the attendance. “We need an answer from PDP. People of Kashmir, who the party claims to represent, need an explanation,” the Provincial President said.

J&K Dialogue: Appointment of Interlocutor is A Non-Starter, Says Pakistan Diplomat Basit

Former Pak high commissioner to India, Abdul Basit has said that there can be no peace if Hurriyat Conference is not taken onboard.

In an interview to Pakistan TodayBasit said that since the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Omer Farooq and Yasin Malik have joined hands under the joint resistance leadership. “Whenever they announce a schedule of strikes and protests that is strictly followed by all Kashmiris. So to say that Hurriyat has become irrelevant is slightly out of place for me.”

According to Abdul Basit Hurriyat represents the political aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I don’t think, given my own experience, that you can achieve peace or resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute without taking the Hurriyat onboard,” Basit said.

Talking about the appointment of former director IB as an interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir, Basit said “It is a non-starter already”.

“I have already tweeted that he is to work within the Indian Constitutional framework, it would remain a non-starter. We are already hearing from different sources that he would not engage different groups,” Basit said.

Supreme Court  To Hear Petitions Challenging Constitutional Validity of Article 35A

Supreme Court  To Hear Petitions Challenging Constitutional Validity of Article 35A

The Supreme Court on Monday will hear a clutch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Article 35A.

The petitions were filed by NGO on grounds that politically contentious Article 35A was illegally added to the Constitution of India as the Article was never proposed before the Parliament.

Four petitions, which demanded the scrapping of the provision, have been listed before a bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.

The main petition was filed by ‘We the Citizens’, a Delhi-based NGO in 2014. Three more petitions were also filed challenging the Article but were later clubbed with the main one.

The issue has come to the centre stage of controversy after the Supreme Court’s indication that it may be dealt with by a five-judge constitution bench, to ascertain that, if Article 35A relating to special rights and privileges of the citizens of the Jammu and Kashmir is ultra vires of the Constitution or if there is any procedural lapse.

Article 35A of the Indian Constitution is an article that empowers the Jammu and Kashmir state’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents, while article 370 gives special status to the state of J&K in the Indian Union.

Article 35A was added to the Constitution by a Presidential Order in 1954 and accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of the Jammu and Kashmir. It also empowers the state’s legislature to frame any law without attracting a challenge on grounds of violating the Right to Equality of people from other states or any other right under the Indian Constitution.

The issue has triggered controversy after a plea was filed by Charu Wali Khanna, a lawyer and former member of the National Commission for Women, challenging Article 35A of the Constitution and Section 6 of the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution which deal with the “permanent residents” of the state.

The plea has challenged certain provisions of the Constitution which deny property right to a woman who marries a person from outside the state. The provision, which makes such women from the state to lose rights over property, also applies to her son.

India Country of Hindus First then others: Shiv Sena

“The RSS chief says like Hindus, India belongs to others as well. The Shiv Sena chief says India belongs to Hindus first and others later, because there are more than 50 countries for Muslims,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ”Saamana”.

Holding that India is a country of Hindus first and others later, the Shiv Sena today said despite a “pro-Hindutva” government at the Centre, issues like Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya and ‘ghar wapsi’ of displaced Kashmiri Pandits are still unresolved.
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had on Friday said in Indore that ‘Hindustan’ is a country of Hindus, but it does not mean that it does not belong to “others”.

“The RSS chief says like Hindus, India belongs to others as well. The Shiv Sena chief says India belongs to Hindus first and others later, because there are more than 50 countries for Muslims,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

“Christians have countries like America and (in) Europe.
Buddhists have China, Japan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Hindus do not have any country except this.

“Today there is a pro-Hindutva majority government in power. Yet, it is not willing to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya and left its future in the hands of court,” it said.
“Despite a pro-Hindutva government, the ghar wapsi of Kashmiri Pandits hasn’t taken place,” said the Sena, which is a constituent of the NDA government at the Centre and an ally of the ruling BJP in Maharashtra.
It also waded into the ongoing debate over playing the national anthem in public places.
A stubborn attitude prevails towards singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ despite the president and the prime minister belonging to the “thought process of the RSS”, and some also do not find it appropriate to stand up while the national anthem is being played, the saffron ally said.
“If these ‘others’ are insulting the national anthem by not standing up, the RSS chief should guide the pro-Hindutva government on what stand it should take against them,” it said.

The Sena further said Bhagwat’s statement that “no one leader or party can make the country great…” also cannot be ignored.
The RSS chief had last week said that no one leader or party can make the country great but it needs a change and we will have to prepare the society for it.

Pvt Schools Directed To Enhance Tuition Fee Not More Than 8 Percent

Pvt Schools Directed To Enhance Tuition Fee Not More Than 8 Percent

Pvt Schools Directed To Enhance Tuition Fee Not More Than 8 Percent

Increase to remain applicable for next 3 years

In a significant development, the Government appointed Committee for Fixation of Fee Structure of Private Educational Institutions of J&K State has directed that increase in tuition fee shall not exceed eight percent of the same as was applicable in August 2014 and this shall remain applicable for the next three years.

The increase shall be effective from the ensuing academic session in the concerned province and if any school has already enhanced its fee structure since August 2014, it shall slash it down immediately as per rules and orders.

In its order, the empowered Committee has further maintained that while fixing or increasing tuition fee, the guidelines laid down by the Apex Court should be kept in view by Educational Institutions, which can not indulge in profiteering and also can not charge capitation fee.

The Committee was approached two months back by the Government to examine the fee enhancement issue following a Division Bench of the J&K High Court’s order, dated 21-08-2017 in case titled Tyndale Biscoe & Mallinson School Vs State of J&K & Others (OWP No 577 of 2017), observed that the State Government may frame a policy of increasing the fee by a certain percentage amount across the board depending on certain criteria, such as rate of inflation etc.

The three-member Committee, headed by Justice (Retd) Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain, considered the matter in light of the judgement of the Apex Court and the High Court on the subject and went through the draft Act to regulate enhancement of fee structure by the Private Educational Institutions. The Committee had also gone through the Acts on the subject made by the neighbouring State like Punjab etc. Kaneez Fatima and Showkat Ahmad Peer are Members of the Committee.

To avoid delay, which generally takes place in the consideration and disposal of such cases, the Committee on consideration of the matter, made provisions for enhancement of the fee by the schools and issued the order number 106-FFC of 2017, dated 20/10/2017.

“Increase in tuition fee shall not exceed 8 percent of the tuition fee as was applicable in August 2014 and fee so increased shall be effective from the ensuing academic session in the concerned province and shall remain applicable for three years,” directs the Committee in its order.

Maintaining that no school was authorized, in terms of the High Court order, dated 01-06-2015, passed in PIL; Parents Body Vs State of J&K & Others, to enhance fee structure without the permission of the Committee, the order further directs that if any school has in violation of the High Court order enhanced its fee structure, it shall slash it down immediately as per rules and orders.

If an Educational Institution requires increase in tuition fee more than 8 percent or within the period of three years, it may approach the Committee for permission of the same along with the documents giving due reasons and grounds for the enhancement. The Committee will, as far as practicable, shall dispose of the same within 30 days.

Educational Institutions, whose prayer for enhancement of fee has earlier been disallowed by the Committee, may also make increase in their fee structure to the extent of and as laid down from the next academic session subject to the condition that such school now qualify for such enhancement in terms of the judgement of the Apex Court.
After Fixing or increasing tuition fee, an Education Institution shall submit a copy of its fee structure to the Committee for record and examination within seven days of such increase.

Special `Cells’ in the office of Chief Education Officers of the districts have been created, which are headed by the Deputy CEO concerned. These `Cells’ shall act as enforcement wings of the Committee. They have been entrusted with the job to monitor implementation of this order and the orders issued by the Committee from time to time and effectively regulate fee structure of the Private Educational Institutions.

The Committee has directed that the ‘Cells’ are required to submit monthly progress reports and other information relating to the subject.

The ‘Cells’ have also been authorized to entertain complaints from the students/parents against the schools, which violate the orders of the Court/Government/Committee issued in this behalf. On receipt of such complaints, the In-charge of the `Cell’ is required to forward the complaints to the Committee along with its report.

Resistance Leaders in a Joint Statement Asked People To Be Ready For Protest Against Any Amendment or Change in The State Subject Laws

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) asked people to launch a mass agitation if the Supreme Court delivers a verdict against the interests of Kashmiris while hearing the petitions on Article 35-A.

JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik asked people to launch mass agitation if the Supreme Court delivers verdict against the interests and aspiration of people of state, saying that any move to tinker with state subject law will create Palestine like situation.

Resistance leaders, in a joint statement, asked people to be ready for protest against any amendment or change in the State Subject laws.
They said the plan to tinker with the Article 35 A, which gives special rights and privileges to the natives of Jammu and Kashmir, is a conspiracy to create a Palestine-like situation in the state.

JRL said the conspiracy has been hatched to change the demography of the Muslim majority state and added if the state-subject law is removed or any amendment introduced, people from other states of India will purchase land in Jammu and Kashmir and a Palestine like situation will arise and added that the people in the state would resist the “conspiracy” tooth and nail.

Joint leadership appealed the lawyers, writers, scholars and other respected members of society to make people aware of the consequences of proposed repealing of state-subject law, and urged them to make every possible effort to reach out to the international community to apprise them about the horrifying situations in the state and its disputed status.

”We will safeguard the integrity and special status of the state at any cost,” JRL stated, saying the BJP regime is working to sabotage the referendum process in the state.

They also urged the pro-India politicians to join the pro-freedom ranks and play their role in resolving this long-pending issue.
In their statement the JRL said the plan to tinker with Article 35A was a well thought out ploy to end the special status of the state. The concern over Article 35A shown by pro- Indian parties was mere rhetoric and gimmick, they added.

Attacking the PDP for its “failure” over Article 35A, JRL called the party an ally of the RSS and the PDP-BJP alliance as an unholy nexus.

They reiterated that if any attempt was made to change, alter or modify this law people from all corners of state will come on roads and resist such move.

“We are in close contact with religious leaders, civil societies, transporters, businessmen, students, lawyers and other groups, saying they will be taken on board and a special delegation has been formulated to make a consensus after seeking their suggestions in this regard.”

They reiterated their appeal asking people to be ready and added “we are watching the developments and soon a line of action and programme will be announced for people.”

Minister of State (MoS) in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that the issue of Kashmir is “the accumulative outcome of the mistakes committed by the Congress” and the Bharatiya Janata Party is “clearing the mess”.

Speaking to media persons at the sidelines of the BJP executive meet at SKICC here, Singh made these remarks a day after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the Kashmir problem was the result of Congress’s “flawed policy”.

“We are trying to clear the mess created by Congress in its 60 years of rule – the mess that was created by successive governments of Congress, right from the dawn of Independence with the infamous Nehruvian blunders,” Singh said.

Referring to the statement of Congress leader P Chidambaram that when people in Kashmir demand ‘Azadi’ they actually mean “greater autonomy”, Singh said that the BJP doesn’t need lectures from leaders like Chidambaram.

President of BJP’s J&K unit, Sat Sharma, said that the NIA raids have “broken the backbone of Hurriyat” and by 2022, “we should have a Hurriyat-free J&K”

“After the killing of Burhan Wani, things had changed drastically in Kashmir, but we restored the peace with greater efforts from the central as well as the state government. We have come out of that turmoil now,” Sharma said, asking party workers to start preparing the ground for the upcoming Panchayat polls.

“We are yet to open an account in Kashmir valley, but we are hopeful of a good start in the next polls. The enthusiasm I see in the BJP workers of Kashmir is worth appreciating,” he said.

Appealing to members and workers of the BJP’s coalition partner PDP to provide help, Sharma said that the dream of both the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the same: to bring peace to the valley.

World is Flat, Even Brexit Has impact on Kashmir

The world has gone so closer to the textbook “village” status that almost every incident across the world has a local impact. With the UK finally out of the European Union, the Brexit has an impact on Kashmir, the ‘other Kashmir’ literally.

With the tumbling down of the sterling rates, the average incomes of the families living in PaK’s “Little London” the Mirpur have gone down, respected Pakistan newspaper The Nation reported.

“With few jobs and little industry, the residents of Pakistan’s “Little England” overwhelmingly rely on family members based in the country for their economic livelihood,” the newspaper reported. “But decades after the first wave of migration, the fraying of filial ties between the communities along with economic woes following the Brexit vote have raised concerns that the once-plentiful funds may dry up for good.”

Quoting a resident Javed Mushtaw, the newspaper said that his family was getting money every month and after the Brexit, they get once in two months. “The value of the pound has decreased and that creates problems for us,” Mushtaq told the newspaper. “Our life is not as easy as before.”

After Britain’s decision to leave the EU, sterling has tumbled, sending inflation surging and raising the cost of living, while uncertainty over the post-Brexit outlook has fuelled concerns about the country’s economy. “And with Kashmir lacking any major resources while unemployment soars, the prospects in Mirpur are dim,” the newspaper said.

“There is no large land holding, no industrial base, we are not on a good route,” a businessman and local official Choudhery Muhammad Saeed told the newspaper. His estimates suggest about $200 million in remittances are sent back to Mirpur a year.

The first and largest wave of migration to the UK began in the 1950s when the inhabitants of Mirpur were displaced by the construction of a dam that engulfed large swathes of the town. In Britain, more than a million residents are of Pakistani origin with the majority believed to be from Mirpur — where they have long built family homes and spent holidays, according to the newspaper.

Remittances have nosedived by almost 10 percent since the June 2016 referendum; the newspaper quoted the Central Bank of Pakistan officials saying. “This decline, after years of steady growth, has worried authorities as an increase in imports and repatriations of profits by foreign companies have jeopardized the country’s foreign exchange reserves,” the newspaper said.
