An Anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi on Thursday declared former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf absconder in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto while acquitting all the five accused arrested in the case.
The court also sentenced former Rawalpindi Central Police Office Saud Aziz and former Rawal Town SP Khurram Shahzad to 17 years each in jail, the news.com.pk reported.
Both the police officials were arrested from the courtroom.
In November 2008, an ATC indicted Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Abdul Rasheed, Rafaqat Hussain and Hasnain Gul for killing, hatching criminal conspiracy to kill, abetting the perpetrators, using illegal explosive material and spreading terrorism on December 27, 2007 when 22 people, including the former Prime Minister, were killed in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh, when she was leaving after attending an election rally.
As the defence and prosecution completed their arguments here on Wednesday, the Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC), Rawalpindi, Judge Muhammad Asghar Khan reserved its verdict in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, which was announced on Thursday.
Benazir Bhutto, who was the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chief and a two-time Prime Minister of Pakistan, was assassinated in a suicide attack at an election campaign rally at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.

Pakistan Court Likely to Give Verdict in Benazir Killing Case
An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan may today deliver its verdict in a decade-old-case involving the gruesome assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Former two-time premier Bhutto was killed in a gun and bombing attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007 when she came out of park after addressing an election rally.
The case was registered soon after the assassination and the trial went through many ups and down until concluded yesterday in Rawalpindi.
The anti-terrorism court will give its judgment on five militants from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terror group and two senior police officers.
ATC Judge Asghar Ali Khan who heard the case in city’s Adiala Jail reserved the judgment after conducting day-to-day hearing going on since Monday.
The trial of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf who was the president when Bhutto was killed and who has been accused will be held separately on his return to Pakistan.
The five suspects Rafaqat Hussain, Husnain Gul, Sher Zaman, Aitzaz Shah and Abdul Rashid were arrested soon after the assassination and have been in jail.
Then Rawalpindi police chief Saud Aziz and SSP Kurrum Shehzad are also among the accused and their fate will be decided in the case. Both were arrested initially but released on bail in 2011.
All accused will be present at the time of announcement of trial.
The main trail five suspects started in January 2008, while Musharraf, Aziz and Shahezad were implicated in 2009 after fresh probe by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Eight different judges heard the case during this period who were changed due to different reasons.
Initially TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud was blamed for murder and Musharraf’s government issued a taped conversation of Mehsud with a certain operator in which he was congratulating the operator for the murder.
But FIA Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Azhar Chaudhry in his concluding arguments disowned the evidence of audio record and transcript of telephonic conversation. He termed it cooked up story Musharraf to mislead the investigators and to save himself.
Rajiv Mehrishi Likely to Replace Vohra As J&K Governor
After many speculations in the past, J&K Governor from last over nine years, Narendra Nath Vohra, is all set to pave way for new Governor, early next month.
The sources Wednesday evening confirmed that the file of resignation has been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for final approval.
After scouting for a replacement for several months, central government, sources said have finalized name of incumbent union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi.
Born on August 08, 1955 in Rajasthan, Mehrishi, a 1978 batch IAS officer from Rajasthan is all set to retire on August 31 after completing his two year term as home secretary.
Believed to be close to NDA government, Mehrishi, on August 31, 2015, the day he was to retire as Union Finance Secretary was asked to continue for two more years as home secretary.
Mehrishi who holds a degree in business administration from Strathclyde Business School, Glasgow has served at key positions in both central government as well as in Rajasthan, his allotted cadre.
The outgoing governor, N N Vohra took over from Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha on June 25, 2008 and is currently serving second term. He is going ten months ahead of his term.
It was reported earlier that Vohra had written to central government asking it for his replacement citing his “age and health.”
A veteran, Vohra 81, a career bureaucrat and retired IAS officer of 1959 batch of Punjab cadre was the first civilian governor of J&K after Jagmohan in nearly two decades and was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2007 for his services.
He held very important positions in his career and was recalled from retirement to head the PMO as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister I.K. Gujral during 1997-98.
Vohra is considered to be the Kashmir expert. Before being appointed as 12th governor of J&K, Vohra had been the central government’s interlocutor in Kashmir. During his tenure as interlocutor, he held wide-ranging discussions with both the unionists and separatist in the valley.
His was in command to withdraw the controversial Amarnath land shrine transfer order in 2008.
His appointment was hailed as being signal to address Kashmir issue politically.
A lecturer in his initial days at Punjab university, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law by the university in 2011.
A writer as well, Vohra has edited over a dozen books and served as an IAS officer till 1994 Before his retirement, he was appointed as home secretary in 1993.

Pertinently the year 2008, he came to Kashmir as governor, valley was up in flames against the land transfer to Amarnath shrine board. The subsequent events marked the exit of chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as PDP withdrew its support from the coalition government.
Later Vohra had to face the unrest of 2009, 2010 and recently 2016. In between his tenure of over nine years, he had two assembly elections in the state.
A tough master, as people in power corridors believe him to be, he had been in command during the imposition of central rule in the state, latest being after the demise of PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in January 2016.
JKLF Chief Participates in A Protest Sit-In Against Forced Disappearances, Says ‘International Community Has Failed People of Kashmir’
“Once international community used to care for human rights but today business and economic considerations stand more dearer to them,” this was stated by Jammu & Kashmir Liberation front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik on Wednesday while speaking to a protest sit-in organized by APDP at Partap Park.
“Brutal killings of more than hundred thousand Kashmiris, destructions of proprieties worth billions, attacks on the chastity of women, thousands of unmarked graves, arrest and torture of thousands, a blanket ban on peaceful political activities and above all, custodial disappearances of more than ten thousand people are all glaring examples of human rights violations in Jammu Kashmir,” Malik said and added that “when anybody dies his family naturally gets consoled with time but if someone is disappeared forcefully and separated from his family, his family keeps looking for his whereabouts and thus the pain and agony for them is unending.”
He according to spokesman said that because of these custodial disappearances, thousands of our sisters are living as half widows and their children do not know whether or not they are orphans and their parents day in and out pass through a worst psychological trauma.
Castigating international community, he said international community has failed people of Kashmir as it has not fulfilled its obligations vis-a-vis Kashmiris.
“Our human rights are being violated on a daily basis but no one seems to care as international community seems more concerned about their economic and business interests than human rights and human values’’.
He said that all talk of establishing peace in the world but for peace to prevail there is need of justice to be delivered to the oppressed people.
“Here in this park today these men, women and children demand justice as their dear ones have been arrested by Indian forces and stand disappeared today’’ said Malik and added that “today jails, police stations and interrogation centers are filled with thousands of political prisoners, young boys and children who are being tortured and terrorized for speaking truth and crying for justice.”
“A blanket ban has been imposed on all peaceful political activities, nocturnal raids, searches, crackdowns and vandalizing properties has become order of the day especially in south Kashmir,” he said.

The caller also informed that the office of the principal and the admission block were partially damaged.
When Kashmir Life contacted principal government degree college Handwara, he refused to comment and remained tight lipped about the incident.

Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba Militants Have Gone into Hiding, Jaish-e-Mohammad Taking Charge: JK Police
Police on Tuesday said that a majority of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba militants have gone into hiding in the upper reaches of South Kashmir and are “banking on the Jaish-e-Muhammad cadre.”
Kashmir range inspector general of police Muneer Ahmad Khan told Greater Kashmir that they have information that militants belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba have “gone underground” in the upper reaches of Tral area in Pulwama district following killing of their top commanders in the recent months.
He said “our investigations reveal that Jaish cadre has taken a frontal role in carrying out strikes on the government forces.”
Asked whether reports that militants were surrendering their mobile phones were true, the Kashmir police chief said that they have no concrete information about it. “But yes, it seems they have damaged their old SIM cards. It is not possible for them to survive without mobile phones; they need to stay in touch with each other. They may have managed to get new numbers or may stay without mobile phones,” Khan said.
He said one of the Hizbul Mujahideen commanders Reyaz Naikoo had recently asked militants to surrender their mobile phones. “But it’s not a petition age,” he said, adding, “They have to use technology.”
Khan said that since militants seem to have changed their strategy by going into hiding, police will also chalk out a “fresh strategy” to track them down. “The operation all-out will continue,” he said
A police source said that it seems “those across the LoC have devised a policy to assign the job of carrying out ‘fidayeen’ attacks to Jaish militants in a bid to save the left-over militants of Hizb and Lashkar.”
“Perhaps this is the reason why forces are not able to track the exact locations of militants despite conducting cordon-and-search operations in nearly a dozen villages at a time,” he said.
Since August 12 this year, when the government forces killed top Hizb commander Muhammad Yasin alias Mehmood Gaznavi and his two associates in a gunfight in Awneera, Shopian, there has been no gunfight anywhere in Kashmir. Besides the killing of six top commanders Sabzar Bhat, Junaid Matoo, Ayoub Lelhari, Bashir Lashkari, Abu Dujana, Mehmood Gaznavi, at least 132 militants were killed in various gunfights this year (so far) in Kashmir
Top army and police officers have been maintaining that killing top leaders of militants was a part of strategy framed in May this year “to bring peace in Kashmir. “ The operation was named as “Operation All-Out.”

“The respondent state by no standard can ignore or isolate the injured people who too are the victims in the same incidents. The petitioner has asked SHRC to direct the respondent state to adopt a complete rehabilitation policy for permanently and partially disabled civilians of 2016 unrest and get the all incidents of violence probed by the investigating agency.

Doklam Stand-Off, a Lesson for India: China`s People`s Liberation Army (PLA)
A day after both nations decided to withdraw troops from the Sikkim border in the ongoing Doklam stand-off, China`s People`s Liberation Army (PLA) has asked India to draw lessons from the entire episode.
Beijing: A day after both nations decided to withdraw troops from the Sikkim border in the ongoing Doklam stand-off, China`s People`s Liberation Army (PLA) has asked India to draw lessons from the entire episode.
“We remind India to draw lessons from the stand-off, abide by established treaties and the basic principles of international law, and work together with China to safeguard peace and stability along the border and promote the healthy development of the two militaries,” said Wu Qian, a senior PLA colonel, in a statement.
The 75-day Doklam stand-off was diffused following diplomatic talks between both sides. The Ministry of External Affairs informed that both the countries have decided to ‘disengage’ troops.
“The Chinese military will remain vigilant and firmly defend its national territory and sovereignty following the military stand-off between China and India,” said Qian.
He further added, “Peace and stability along the China-India border concern regional peace and stability and accords with the common interests of people on both sides of the border.”
On July 27, UK newspaper The Guardian ran a story of Kashmiri militant Zakir Musa becoming head of ‘Al-Qaeda linked cell’ – Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. The creation of the group was announced by Global Islamic Media Front, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated information network, a report in the guardian said.
A day after this news, United Jihad Council’s supreme commander and chief of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Syed Salahuddin, in a video message said that ISIS and Al-Qaeda has no role in Kashmir. In a veiled reference to Zakir, who parted ways from Hizb, he said that some of “our friends play in the hands of our enemy and are harming the unity of the nation and its leadership”.
Zakir Rashid Bhat alias Zakir Musa was born in July 1994 in Noorpora village of Tral in Pulwama district. Son of an engineer, Zakir belongs to an affluent family. His brother is an orthopaedic and sister a banker. Then a student of BTech in Chandigarh, he had come home for vacations with his friends from college and he decided to stay back. Meanwhile, he got in contact with militants and days later, he left home to join Burhan Wani and got associated with militant ranks in 2013. Zakir replaced Burhan as the commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen following the killing of later in an encounter in Kokernag township of Anantnag district on 8th July, 2016.
In April this year Zakir released a video message in which he criticized Pakistan for being “un-Islamic”. “We have to do jihad with Pakistan as well,” he had said. Musa said the armed insurgency—which has claimed the lives of thousands since 1989—was aimed at the creation of an “Islamic Kashmir”, unlike the stated position of militants whose aim is to separate Kashmir from India. Musa said, “Our intention should be that, we have to achieve ‘Azadi’ (freedom) to establish Islamic rule and not for secular state. If we are fighting for secular state, then my blood won’t be spilled for that purpose”. Musa even called the leaders of the Hurriyat Conference “hypocrites, infidels, followers of evil” and threatened to chop off their heads “if they create hurdles in the path of making Kashmir an Islamic State”. He had said their heads will be hanged in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, as Hurriyat leaders, including hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderates Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, had denounced terror groups such as the ISIS and Al-Qaeda, saying they had no role in Kashmir. The developments came as a shock to resistance leadership and general public.
Zakir Musa in May 2017 parted ways with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen following his announcement through a video message that he is “fighting” for implementation of Sharia in Kashmir. “If Hizbul Mujahideen doesn’t represent me, then I also don’t represent them. From now onwards, I have no association with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen”, he stated. He denounced “nationalistic struggle” as forbidden in Islam and even “threatened” Hurriyat leadership.
Hurriyat leadership in Kashmir have always disassociated themselves from radical Islamist groups, mainly to maintain legitimacy as a political struggle that carried Kashmiris’ support and have always insisted that the struggle was indigenous.
Musa’s new approach has not been able to garner much support among the ranks of militants and Hurriyat leadership as not only in the current geo-political situation, Kashmiri leadership have always distanced themselves from radicalized hardliners and groups such the ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Emphasizing that Kashmir freedom movement is indigenous, resistance leaders said that Kashmiri’s have no global ambition and the global groups are non-existent in Kashmir.
Recently HM commander Riyaz Naikoo appeared in the funeral of slain militant Shariq Ahmad at Takuna and addressed the gathering in which he gave a short and furious speech indicating a thorough rejection of Al-Qaeda’s recent entry into Valley under the leadership of his former colleague Zakir Musa. He cautioned the people to not “fall into the trap”, of the new discourse being worked up by Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind, the affiliate of Al-Qaeda, as it was a bid to bring notoriety to Kashmir struggle. “Linking our struggle with Al-Qaeda and ISIS is a strategy to defame our struggle,” he said.
Zakir in his fresh audio message circulated as Al-Hurr tagline paid rich tributes to militant commander Abu Dujana and his associate Arif Lelhari and said that they are the “first martyrs of jihad movement” he is leading. He also announced his affiliation with Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, the India chapter of Al-Qaeda and termed both the slain as premier movers in its making. Musa in a 2 minute purported audio message that has gone viral on social media says: “In the making of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, they played a key role and became first martyrs of this Jihad movement”. In the audio clip he says that “When Dujana joined us, the so called bosses of Jihad in Pakistan placed a number of hurdles for him”. He termed the slain duo as “Mardan-e-Hurr”, fighting for one God.
After the Gulab Bagh encounter in Tral that claimed the lives of three militants and a civilian, HM spokesperson came with the statement in which he asserted that the slain militants were on way to rejoin HM after disassociating from Zakir Musa’s group. He further stated that they will soon expose the elements who divide Kashmiris and their leadership.
It is crystal clear that Zakir Musa has laid the foundation of Al-Qaeda in Kashmir. Now, the question that arises is why Zakir joined Al-Qaeda despite the strong opposition of all at the helm of affairs.
Brief History of Al-Qaeda and ISIS
CIA, the intelligence agency of US, gave birth to Osama Bin Laden and breastfed his organization during the 1980’s. Former British Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, told the House of Commons that Al Qaeda was unquestionably a product of Western intelligence agencies. Mr. Cook explained that Al Qaeda, which literally means an abbreviation of “the database” in Arabic, was originally the computer database of the thousands of Islamist extremists, who were trained by the CIA and funded by the Saudis, in order to defeat the Russians in Afghanistan.
America’s relationship with Al Qaeda has always been a love-hate affair. Depending on whether a particular Al Qaeda group in a given region furthers American interests or not, the U.S. State Department either funds or aggressively targets that group. Even as American foreign policy makers claim to oppose extremism, they knowingly foment it as a weapon of foreign policy.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) used to have a different name: Al Qaeda in Iraq. After 2010 the group rebranded and refocused its efforts on Syria. America’s Middle East policy revolves around oil and Israel. The invasion of Iraq has partially satisfied Washington’s thirst for oil, but ongoing air strikes in Syria and economic sanctions on Iran have everything to do with Israel. The goal is to deprive Israel’s neighboring enemies, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Palestine’s Hamas, of crucial Syrian and Iranian support. ISIS is not merely an instrument of terror used by America to topple the Syrian government; it is also used to keep Muslim Ummah divided so as to serve the interests of America, Israel and their allies. They have killed more Muslims than anyone else in this world. America is using ISIS in three ways: to attack its enemies in the Middle East, to serve as a pretext for U.S. military intervention abroad, and at home to foment a manufactured domestic threat, used to justify the unprecedented expansion of invasive domestic surveillance.
Why do people get romanced with these radical groups and what’s the way out ?
Unfortunately, a large chunk of Muslims in the world are getting trapped under the plot of America, Israel and their allies. They get romanticized with the wave created by vested interests who don’t even know the ABC of Islam. They don’t follow the true instructions of Allah Almighty, Prophet Mohammad (SAW), Ahlulbayt (A.S.), Companions and Quran. They only follow those fellows who show them wrong picture of Islam under the deceptive flag of Islam like ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Boko Haram. Growing number of people are finding solace in these radical thoughts. They seem to be in a hurry to end their suffering and new ideologies offer them a quick fix solution. They think there is nothing to lose. It’s better to die with the hope of going to paradise than live a long life of wretchedness on this earth.
Jihad which is the holy word of Islam has been misinterpreted. Jihad means safety for all humanity. Islam doesn’t allow to impose our ideology forcibly on others. Islam directs us to safeguard and protect people associated with different faiths. When we can do Jihad being alive so why should we die for it. Why should we die or kill others to impose the Islamic system. Islam is such a beautiful and perfect religion that we don’t need force to impose it. It will find its place once we change our inner souls as per the Islamic values.
Kashmir is a political issue which needs a political settlement and it’s the main reason people like Arundhati Roy, Gautam Navlakha support it despite stiff resistance from their country. Jammu & Kashmir as a whole is a abode to Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and so on. It belongs to everyone. So everyone will have a say for final and sustainable solution to Kashmir imbroglio.
Finally, a word of advice to Zakir Musa
You are too young to comprehend the different facets of Kashmir dispute. There are enlightened thinkers, intelligentsia, very religious and highly educated intellectuals out there who are working tirelessly for Kashmir cause. Let them develop an opinion on Kashmir which will be acceptable to all. Your Al-Qaeda association will only bring misfortune to Kashmir. It will give justification to world community to brand Kashmir indigenous struggle as terrorism. If you really care about Kashmir then sever your ties with Al-Qaeda. The early you will do it, the better it will turn for Kashmir. You are a well known figure now. You can make a huge difference. You can impress upon India, Pakistan and leadership of Kashmir to bring a long lasting solution to Kashmir issue. You can persuade them that we have lost enough youth due to this conflict and its time to achieve a political solution to Kashmir tangle. We must realize and accept this fact that we can never achieve any solution to Kashmir problem due to violence. It has only brought death and destruction to Kashmir. We have seen enough bloodshed. No more, please!
Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif has said that Pakistan had suspended talks and bilateral visits with the United States as “a mark of protest” over the recent “anti-Pakistan diatribe” by US President Donald Trump.
The Pak minister told the Senate, which converted itself into a committee prior to its regular session, that Pakistan had taken the fiery remarks seriously.
US Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice Wells was supposed to arrive Islamabad today, while the Pak foreign minister himself was to travel to the US last week under the previous schedule.
About the recently unveiled policy of the US president on South Asia, Asif said it envisaged no military role for India in Afghanistan. The minister said “it was rather a role of economic development.” He claimed during the in-camera session of the committee that India would not be allowed to use Afghan soil to “destabilise Pakistan”.
Shocking! Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Has Sexual Relations With Daughter Honeypreet
Today, the self-styled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan has been pronounced guilty of the rape charges and has been sentenced to twenty years of imprisonment by the CBI court. Earlier, it was ten years, but later they revised it to twenty for two different cases, i.e., ten years each. His followers who have been engaging in violence since the past few days, torced two cars in Sirca and may even engage in further violence and vandalism.
Now, another controversy has erupted as his son-in-law Vishwas Gupta has filed a petition stating that his wife Honeypreet has been sexually involved with her father, Ram Rahim Singh. Reports in HT suggest that she is his adopted daughter and she married Vishwas Gupta in the year 1999. Vishwas’s grandfather who was a former MLA of the Gharaunda constituency was a believer of Dera Sacha Sauda. He was lured to sell off their agricultural land and property by Dera people and was told that the proceeds would go to Dera factories and in case of dire need, they would be returned the money. However, the agreement was breached and Vishwas filed the petition soon after this.
The petition states that he is not allowed to meet his wife by the Dera Chief even for a day and she has been kept by him all the time in the Dera by enticing her with intention to have illicit sexual intercourse with her” knowing well that she is a legally wedded wife. Then one day, he happened to see the Dera Chief totally nude with his wife. He and his family were threatened and so he shifted from Panchkula.

Afzal Guru Squad (AGS ) Afzal Guru ka inteqaam.” These words were written in blood on the walls of the ‘C’ building where Militants were held and later killed by the security forces in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Saturday.
Sources in Jammu and Kashmir Police told Mirror that after the killing of the two special police officers, the Militants might have used the blood of the slain cops to write the graffiti on the wall.
Jaish-e-Mohammad fidayeen, who stormed the District Police Lines complex and killed eight security personnel, were well-trained and had come prepared to wage a long battle.
“These Militants were highly trained, and this why they had given a tough fight. The Militant hiding in the “C” building was particularly offensive. For almost 12 hours, he confronted the security forces. He was firing continuously and throwing UBGL grenades.
The kind of ammunition the Militants were carrying shows they were in for a long haul,” said one of the security officers who was part of the team that gunned down the three Militants. (Via: MUMBAI Mirror)

Ten months ahead of his term ending, Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra is likely to resign from his post, The Indian Express reported.
“The development could take place as early this week, even today,” the report quoting sources said. Vohra, serving his second term, took over from SK Sinha on June 25, 2008.
This follows speculation, in July this year, that he was seeking to retire. However, the Home Ministry denied reports saying they received no such letter from the Governor’s office. It has been known that the Centre has been scouting for a replacement for several months.
Vohra had earlier served as Union Home Secretary as well as Defence Secretary. He also served as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister IK Gujral between 1997-98. Vohra, 81, is also a recipient of the Padma Vibushan.
Rape Convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Sentenced To Ten Years Of Imprisonment
The Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who was held guilty on charges of rape of a female devotee in 1999, was on Monday sentenced to ten years of imprisonment by the Special CBI Court of Panchkula.
The self-styled godman will now be taken for a medical examination, after which he will be given a jail uniform and will be allotted a cell in the jail.
The Special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh had allotted 10 minutes each to both sides to put forth their arguments. The prosecution, reportedly, had demanded the maximum punishment for the rape convict.
The Defence had argued that Ram Rahim was a social worker, who had worked for the welfare of people, so the judge should take a lenient view.
Just minutes before the pronouncement of the sentence, two cars were reportedly torched by the Dera Sacha Sauda supporters in the Phoolka area of Haryana’s Sirsa.
Ram Rahim was convicted with the charges of rape on Friday (August 25) by the Special CBI Court.
The rape case was registered by the CBI in April 2002 against the self-styled godman after allegations of sexual exploitation of two women followers. The then prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had received an anonymous letter from a Dera Sadhvi that she was being raped by Ram Rahim.
Following Ram Rahim’s conviction on Friday, his ‘bhakts’ went on a rampage in Haryana’s Panchkula and Sirsa, demanding justice for their leader and Punjab, Haryana and their neighbouring states have, since, been on the edge.
In what was seen as a massive upheaval, an ocean of people resorted to vandalising public property – by destroying public transport, burning vehicles and even attacking the media
Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) B.S. Sandhu revealed that 52 cases were registered and 926 people arrested so far. As for casualties, 38 people died in the violence; six casualties from Sirsa and 32 from Panchkula were reported. Also, over 250 people were injured.
Following this, arrangements were made for the sitting of a CBI Court in the Sunaria District Jail, where the rape convict is currently stationed, for the pronouncement of quantum of the sentence.
Rohtak District Collector (DC) Atul Kumar also stated that if any anti-social elements are spotted trying to harm themselves or others, shoot at sight orders will be passed immediately.
Additionally, to avoid unnecessary movement of vehicles around the Sunaria Jail, schools and colleges remained closed.
Ahead of the proceedings, Inspector General (I.G.) of Police, Rohtak Range Navdeep Singh Virk said that few weapons were recovered from Bahalgarh’s Dera Ashram in the Sonepat district, and that a search operation was underway.
A total of 1,500 district policemen, 500 from other districts and 23 paramilitary companies were deployed at Rohtak’s boundaries.
Also, 37 companies of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) were kept ready to be utilised at the time of any untoward situation in Sirsa.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had also directed National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the Director, Intelligence Bureau, Dineshwar Sharma, to continuously monitor the situation in Punjab and Haryana. (ANI)
