A man handed over his eight-year-old daughter to an elderly landlord as a mortgage after failing to pay him back Rs100,000 loan in Tando Bago town.
The shameful deal came to light when Ms Soomri Machhi approached Tando Bago police station and complained that her husband Achar Machhi had sold off her daughter Nazia, 8, to an old landlord Ali Murad Chandio in Pathan Water village near the town.
Police raided the village to recover the girl and returned her to her mother who accused his husband of having sold the girl for Rs100,000.
Tando Bago SHO Ali Anwer Leghari confirmed the girl had been sold and said further investigation was under way.
Achar Machhi told journalists that he had handed over his daughter as mortgage after having failed to pay back the loan he had taken from the landlord.
Police did not register an FIR nor made any arrest in the case.
A family in central Kashmir’s Budgam district has claimed that their grandson, who was affiliated with Al-Qaeda militant outfit, was killed in a US drone strike in Khurasan area of Afghanistan in July this year
The family of slain Abdullah-Ibn-Aijaz, a 15-year-old militant, claimed that their grandson was among the al-Qaeda militants killed in the US drone strike.
Abdullah Ibn-Aijaz alias Abu Umair, is a son of Aijaz Ahanger, a former Kashmiri militant of Harkatul-Mujahideen, who was reported missing by his family in 1995 but had actually crossed the border and lived in Afghanistan.
Abu Umair was also grandson of Abdullah Gazali, a former chief of Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen outfit who resides at a village in Berwah pocket of central Kashmir. Ghazali, originally Abdul Ghani Dar, was one of the oldest militants when he was captured by the government forces in 1992 as the chief of TeM.
“I was arrested in 1992 and lodged at Rangret jail,” Dar, told Kashmir Reader adding that he among others he met a young, noble, sincere and handsome boy Ajaz Ahmad Ahanger, a resident of Nawakadal area of Srinagar, inside the jail. Ajaz was a militant, and was arrested and detained in the same jail,” he added. “After we were released, I decided to marry one of my daughters with him. He accepted the proposal and marriage was solemnized in 1995,” he said.
He said that after his release, Ahanger was not allowed by the forces to live a normal and peaceful life. “A few months later he went missing and didn’t return ever since,” Dar said. He said that a few months later, a militant told them on his arrival from Pakistan that he had spotted Ahanger there. He said that Ahanger later shifted to Afghanistan and remained in touch with the family on telephone. He said that the family attempted to persuade him to return but he refused. Finally, his son and wife were sent to Afghanistan on a valid passport. They (Ahanger’s wife and son) even returned in 203 and stayed with the family back home for three months.
Aijaz Ahanger has four children-two sons Abdullah and Muhammad and two daughters, Sayima and Sabra. Both his sons have joined Al-Qaida. “Abdullah Ibn Ajaz-15 was the elder son and got martyrdom on 20-July this year in US drone attack,” Dar told Kashmir Reader.
We got a call from them on Friday informing us that Abdullah-Ibn-Ajaz has been killed along with his three associates, in a drone attack. (KR).
Calling PDP a party of hypocrites, AIP Supremo and MLA Langate Er. Rasheed has expressed surprise over party’s seeking help from Huriyat leadership to end up militancy.
While interacting with a group of youth from Srinagar, Er. Rasheed said that on one side PDP leadership begs Huriyat for peace and seeks its intervention to end militancy but on the other hand, the party has bundles Huriyat leaders to New Delhi for getting them humiliated at the hands of investigating Agencies, Indian media and politicians. Er. Rasheed said “How can Huriyat help in ending militancy if New Delhi has made Huriyat defunct and is ignoring the basic fact that Huriyat is creation of militancy and militancy is not their creation.
Whatsoever Mehbooba Mufti has said in Srinagar during Public Meet on Kashmir dispute is nothing but to strengthen New Delhi’s weak view point on Kashmir, make pro-resistance leadership irrelevant and mislead the world community. She needs to learn that it is only UN resolutions and nothing else that make J&K an internationally recognized dispute.
Let Mehbooba Mufti realize that main stream has failed to deliver since 1996, when first time elections were held and main stream promised stars and moons from the sky. Due to its own utterances and politics of deception main stream has lost the right to speak over Kashmir issue and anything spoken by the major main stream parties will be seen as an desperate attempt to restore the credibility of the bulldozed main stream”.
Er. Rasheed asked Mehbooba Mufti to explain that if Party seeks help f resistance leaders and at the same time puts them behind bars, why should Mirwaiz be not allowed to put forward his view point over the allegations leveled against him by various agencies. He said “It is shameful that while Govt. accuses Mirwaiz of making money out of the movement, Govt. is stopping him from speaking the truth.
People would have been the best to judge what Mirwaiz is speaking. By not allowing him the press conference Govt. has exposed itself and it is proven beyond doubt that due to fear of exposing the Govt. and its agencies, Mirwaiz was not allowed to speak and New Delhi wants him to say only that part of the story what may suit to it”.

Outfits seeking debate on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir are “playing with fire” as the issue is linked to the state’s accession to India, this was stated by former chief minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah.
Omar was speaking at the event ‘Understanding Kashmir’, hosted by social group ‘BRIEF’.
Omar was responding to assertions made by Attorney General K K Venugopal that the NDA government wanted a “larger debate” on Article 35A which provides special rights and privileges to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“How can you debate special status of Jammu and Kashmir without debating accession? You can’t. They are two sides of the same coin. J&K acceded to India on the special status that was granted to it,” Omar is quoted to have said. He said the BJP needs to understand that the outfits which are bringing this up are “playing with fire”.
“It’s these sort of steps that glamorise Azaadi,” he said.
Omar reiterated that accession of J&K to India is final and any solution should come from within the four walls of the constitution.
Referring to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s statement that one can change friends but not neighbours, he said a “positive and constructive” engagement with Pakistan is a necessity to find a solution to the Kashmir problem.
Blaming the Centre for the “shrinking” of political space for mainstream parties in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar said it has become popular to blame Pakistan for everything that is happening in the state.
“It’s not just mainstream players in Jammu and Kashmir who are responsible for what is happening. The Union of India is responsible, whether it was the UPA or the NDA government. It’s popular to blame our neighbour for everything that is happening in the state but it is not true,” he said.
The former chief minister said while the country knows that Pakistan fishes in troubled waters, “we also know that they are not the creators of the agitations we have seen in 2008, 2010 or 2016”.
Omar said the erosion of political space this time has been far more rapid than it has been in recent years and cited the state government’s failure to conduct an election in south Kashmir.
“This is the first election in J&K that the Hurriyat conference has won, because since 1996 they have been saying that elections should not take place. There should be a boycott. Elections should be disrupted. On the back of the protests, you cancelled that election and handed victory to them,” he is quoted to have said.
Omar said it was not just the political space of the regional parties that has shrunk, “even the ability of the government of India and the Election Commission has shrunk to the point that you put your hands up and walked away”.

Protests erupted in Bhaderwah town of Jammu and Kashmir after policemen beat up a Union President with gun butts before bundling him into a van.
Witnesses said that Mohsin Ganai collapsed on the busy Takia Chowk in Bhadarwah town after policemen kicked and thrashed him before being bundled into the car of SDPO Bhadarwah Brijesh Sharma
The incident triggered massive protests and spontaneous shutdown in the town with protesters blocking the road near Jamia Masjid Chowk amid anti-police slogans.
The protesters surrounded the police vehicles while demanding that senior officers take immediate action against the erring police officer.
Later, MLA Bhaderwah Dalip Singh Parihar reached at the spot and pacified the protestors.
He said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
“I have asked the Senior Superintendent of Police Doda to conduct a detailed probe and submit a report, based on which action will be taken,” he said.
Ganai, who has been admitted at Sub District Hospital Bhadarwah, is being treated for multiple injuries including injured ribs.
“I was in total shock when without any provocative cops suddenly pounced on me and started beating me with rifle butts and dragged me into the gypsy,” said Ganai.
SDPO Bhadarwah Brijesh Sharma said that Ganai tried to push him after misbehaving with traffic police cop.
“Mohsin Ganai was misbehaving with the traffic cop who was trying to manage traffic at busy Takiya Chowk, when I tried to intervene and asked him about his behavior, he even tried to push me,” alleged the police officer.
“Cops on the duty tried to take him to the police station by asking him to sit in the police Gypsy, on which he created a scene.”
Militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen has said that the attack on the family members of the militants will not break the resolve of the freedom loving people.
In a statement to news agency CNS, Hizbul Mujhadeen Deputy Chief Saifullah Khalid condemned the attack of government forces on the family members of Hizb militant Tawseef Ahmed.
“Thrashing and torturing the kids and the sisters of Tawseef is unpardonable and those involved will face the music. Tawseef and other militants will continue to pursue their objective despite this incident,” Khalid said.
Expressing sympathies with the family of Tawseef, the Hizb Deputy Chief assured them that their sacrifices will not go waste. “It is shocking that a country that is claiming to be a global power is scared of militants and targeting their families,” he said.
Reiterating that Right to self-determination is the only solution to J&K dispute, incumbent Langate lawmaker, Er Rasheed has said that militants, stone pelters and protestors are not criminals.
He said that New Delhi’s history of broken promises created Burhan Wani, Afzal Guru and likeminded people in J&K.
Speaking at a two day conference, which was attended by various political leaders, former and foreign diplomats, bureaucrats and journalists, besides Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in New Delhi on Friday, Rasheed lashed out at New Delhi for misleading the people of India.
He said: “New Delhi should introspect and answer if Kashmiris could raise Pakistani and Chinese flags, why couldn’t New Delhi manage even five people who would hoist tri-colour in Kashmir. The bitter reality is that not only the mainstream politicians but the every institution that has some connection with New Delhi has lost its credibility and New Delhi is controlling Kashmir only at the barrel of the gun.”
The firebrand lawmaker said that discussing Kashmir issue carried no significance as everybody is aware of the fact ‘what the J&K dispute is about’. “Crying radicalization, humiliating Hurriyat leaders and targeting various organizations will fetch New Delhi nothing except increasing anger against India. Nobody should forget that the resistance movement is not because of pro-resistance leadership but huge majority of Kashmiris want right to self-determination,” he said.
“Those talking about the view point of people of Jammu & Ladakh and that of various sectarian and cultural groups need to realize that plebiscite gives every individual, group, community or region equal rights to express his or her views about future of the state. Autonomy and other slogans are out dated and Kashmiris have not offered sacrifices for a solution within Indian constitution but for right to self-determination,” he said, adding, “If India wants to become permanent member of United Nations then it must show magnanimity to own the UN resolution.”
Lashing out at News Delhi for killing, blinding, humiliating, terrorizing and jailing Kashmiris in the name of nationalism, Rasheed said, “If talking about resolution of Kashmir dispute means being anti-national, Pakistani agent or something else we all Kashmiris feel proud in owing these allegations.”
“Taking oath under Indian constitution doesn’t mean that one should lie, mislead, misrepresent or become a yes man of New Delhi. J&K is neither India’s integral part nor Pakistan’s Jugular vein. Let all the national parties keep J&K dispute above politics and understand that J&K issue has nothing to do with India’s sovereignty,” he said.
Rasheed also lashed out at BJP leaders present in the conference for disgracing July 13 martyrs and also rejected Mehbooba Mufti’s part of speech in the conference, in which she asked New Delhi to give its own solution for the resolution of dispute.
He said: “Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah or anyone else has no moral or legal right to talk about any such solution that would dilute the disputed nature of J&K. New Delhi can never ever defeat the will and conviction of Kashmiris and should not remain under the confusion that it will overcome Kashmiris like it did in Nagaland, Mizoram or Punjab as J&K unlike these states is not India’s Integral part.

Supreme Court Justice Asif Saeed Khosa started the court’s announcement of its verdict on the Panama Papers case shortly after 12:00pm.
Apologising for the delay, he gave the podium to Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, who headed the apex court’s implementation bench following its April 20 order on the case.
Justice Khan said the bench had recommended that all material collected by the JIT would be sent to an accountability court within six weeks, and that cases would be opened against Captain Muhammad Safdar, Maryam, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz as well as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. A judgement should be announced within 30 days, he said
The prime minister was additionally disqualified from holding his office. The judges ruled that the prime minister had been dishonest to parliament and the courts and could not be deemed fit for his office.
The judgement was unanimous, with all judges agreeing to the verdict.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday warned against any tinkering with Article 35(A) of the constitution that is being debated in the Supreme Court and which empowers the state legislature to define “permanent residents” and accord special rights and privileges to them.
Strongly defending the constitutional clause, Mehbooba said that any change in its status would invite repercussions and mean that nobody would be able to protect the Indian national flag in Jammu and Kashmir.
She said that mainstream parties like the National Conference and her own Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risk their workers’ lives who stand up and carry the tricolour in Kashmir.
“Any tinkering with the article won’t be acceptable. I won’t hesitate in saying that nobody will even carry the corpse of the National Flag in Kashmir (if the article is scrapped). Let me make it very clear,” she said at an event here on Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said that by employing such tactics, “you are not targeting separatists who have an agenda to secede but you are weakening the forces who have accepted India, participated in elections. They make efforts to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with India with respect and dignity. You are weakening them.”
The Article 35(A) is being challenged in the Supreme Court by NGO ‘We The Citizens’ on its legal basis because the article was never presented before the Parliament and executed on the orders of President of India.
The provision was implemented in 1954 when then President Rajendra Prasad used the powers conferred on him by Article 370 to introduce the “Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order 1954”.
Under the article, citizens from other parts of the country cannot acquire immovable property in Jammu and Kashmir or take up employment with the state government.
The Supreme Court has now referred the case to a three-judge bench for a larger debate over it.
Government on Friday imposed “undeclared” restrictions in parts of Old City in Srinagar to thwart protests called by the resistance leadership.
Dr Farooq Lone, DC Srinagar informed us that the restrictions have been imposed in downtown areas under section 144. “It bars the assembly of four or more persons falling under the restricted areas.”
Although, the Deputy Commissioner would issue a statement about the restrictions a day ahead, it was not the case this Friday.
Pertinently, for the last five Fridays, government has not allowed congregational Friday prayers in the historic Jamia mosque. The move has drawn flak from various quarters terming it direct interference in religious matters.
On Thursday a meeting of Ulema and Imam’s of various mosques was held at Mirwaiz Manzil in Srinagar. A unanimous resolution was passed in the meeting terming the continuous lockdown of the Jamia Masjid by authorities as unacceptable and “direct interference in religious affairs.”
“Imposing strict curbs in Downtown areas on every Friday to prevent people from reaching to the grand masjid, caging Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is highly condemnable. Government must refrain from such an anti-Islam practice and ensure people are allowed to offer prayers at Jamia from now onwards,” the resolution read.
Addressing the participants over phone, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir’s head priest and Hurriyat (m) chairperson said: “It has become a regular affair of the government and its forces that on every Friday entire Downtown is turned into a military zone, all roads sealed with barbed wires and gates of Jamia Masjid locked? It’s high time we rise to an occasion to condemn this direct interference in religious affairs,” he said. (Kashmir Life).
